it's in other part of his body, not just the legs.. He did have back surgery over a year ago.. he has had the cramping for years, got worse when his back got real bad, and I think even worse after the surgery.. You think it could be from his back? He did have herniated disks..

Is he on one of the cholesterol lowering drugs? The statins? They can cause that.

Cramping at rest? or cramping with activity?

If at rest, consider adding supplemental calcium.

If with activity - this is a condition called "claudication." It is a problem with inadequate blood supply getting to the leg muscles. It typically gets worse with walking and improves with rest only. It is NOT associated with nocturnal cramping or cramping associated with rest UNLESS it can be induced with activity too. If this is the case, please consult a vascular doctor (usually with a cardiology practice) who can have this further evaluated.

Statin medications are implicated in muscle soreness and acheyness but do not usually cause cramping per se. I doubt that is your source of problem.

Cog wheeling - stiffness - is a more typical presentation in Parkinsonism. There may be other neurologic disorders to consider, however. It would have to be a central (from the brain or spinal column) if it was a problem happening all over verses a problem just affecting one limb.

Good luck.

Medicine is not always exotic or mysterious...cramping for years, worse after back surgery....I think there is an excellent possibility that it could be related to his back.
