A high fever with a sudden onset is often the first complaint. The elderly may have only a low-grade fever. A productive cough with abnormally thick and discolored sputum. Dyspnea (difficulty breathing), chest pain with inhalations. There may be night sweats. These are symptoms the affected person would notice. Not the things that would be assessed or tested for.
