Beer, and Dr Pepper. Because I live in the South. And in this area BBQ is a type of food, not the thing you cook it on, that's called a 'grill'. If you invited me to a bbq then that would mean that you were planning to spend at least 16, but I would expect it to be more like 24 hours cooking a pig, or only half a pig if it were a small party, and if you wanted help with that you would have invited me to cook bbq, not to come to it after and enjoy your hard work.

So therefore, since the pig (and the sides, since you didn't mention that I needed to bring something) would be done, all that is left to bring is beverages, and so it's a few beers for the adults and Dr Pepper for the kids.

My secret recipe deviled eggs[the recipe is straight out of Betty Crocker's cookbook, but my friends don't know that, they think I do something really special, and gobble them down]. Nobody ever thinks of dessert, so I'd bring the stuff to make somemores with, or make something light and fluffy, and citrus, after all that heavy bbq sauce and meat and beans and potatoes. Like lemon bars.
and oh, yeah, I'd make sure you had plenty of drinks on hand. Do you have enough beer, or do you have plenty of ice for the cooler would be 2 questions I would think to ask.

I would create a nice earthy outdoor centerpiece for your table which you could use inside or outside whenever you entertain. A gift of appreciation for the invite.

I'd bring my citrus salad. It's really healthy and everyone loves it. It consists of diced up oranges, tangerines, grapefruit in a vinegar/sesame oil type dressing. Yummmm!

A veggie tray with ranch dressing - It's something most people don't think to bring and it's always a hit.

A dessert - the more the merrier.
