Probably nothing, if you look at the side effects listed on wikipedia, many of them are probably bogus. Many of the side effects listed are secondary to the condition which you are treating (flaky, burning skin) or to another previously present health problem (hepatitis).

Remember that herpes (and most viral) tests are prone to errors because they test for antibodies, rather than culturing the organism as in bacterial infections. If your lesion doesn't go away, it is still possible that you have herpes. You should be retested after your body has significant time to produce antibodies (10-14 days after initial infection).

Probably It will just be a preventing and making you relief from the pain. Moreover, if you have some kind of viral infection, it will wipe it out if you take it all the course that the doctor gave you.
For example, if you have hypochondria symptoms but you went to the doctor and the doctor prescribed nothing, you don't feel good right? you don't fee like this doctor is doing a right thing. so, you go to another doctor and he gvies you some medication, then your pain is relief although you actually do not have anything. Certain drugs can be used as prevention as well as relieving. But do not take those for long terms meaning 1-2 years without having any disease. This will effect your liver and kidneys. so, just for a short period, this will just be nothing. If you really want to clear your mind, ask your doctor. I will give you the link below and you can ask the MD on the web by email! they do reply in 1 week or so. just wait for the answer awhile. Good Luck!

No big deal. Acyclovir is prescribed for other things, too. It won't hurt you. People with chicken pox, bell's palsy, shingles often Rxd it. Above illnesses caused by herpes strain, but i'm just saying not just for oral/genital herpes. Were you tested because you had sores or just to see if you had it?? If because of sores, GO BACK TO DOCTOR!! You need to know what you have. Good luck.

How should I take acyclovir?

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Treatment with acyclovir should be started as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (such as tingling, burning, blisters).
Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
To take the buccal tablet (Sitavig):
- Keep the tablet in its blister pack until you are ready to take it. Use a dry finger to remove the tablet.
- Do not chew or swallow a buccal tablet. Place the flat side of the tablet against your upper gum, behind your lip and above your canine tooth. Place the tablet on the same side of the mouth as your cold sore.
- Close your mouth and gently press on the outside of your lip over the tablet, holding it in place for 30 seconds. Avoid touching or pressing on the tablet once it is in place.
- Allow the tablet to dissolve in your mouth throughout the day. You may eat and drink normally while the buccal tablet is in place.
- During the first 6 hours of wearing time: If the tablet falls off or does not stick well, you may replace it with a new tablet. If you accidentally swallow the tablet, drink a glass of water and put a new tablet in place.
Tell your doctor if you have any changes in weight. Acyclovir doses are based on weight (especially in children and teenagers), and any changes may affect the dose.
Drink plenty of water while you are taking acyclovir to keep your kidneys working properly.
Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely treated. Acyclovir will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold.
Lesions caused by herpes viruses should be kept as clean and dry as possible. Wearing loose clothing may help to prevent irritation of the lesions.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
