Hardly imperfect. The human body is all about making the most use of limited space. Just like in building, sharing common walls give the structure support and yet provides room for all of the needed organs. This is similar to the heart that has two artium and two ventricles, it share common walls, gives support and stills maintains strength and integrity.

Actually it is smart designing because we are designed with a epiglottis which closes over the larynx and trachea while swallowing to prevent food or liquids from entering the lungs. The human body is a design marvel.
