My father is also gay. He grew up in the 1940s-50s, when there was nowhere that homosexuality was acceptable. In fact, it was considered a psychological disorder, and I am told that he actually received treatment. He married my mom and had kids and everyone was miserable. The best thing that happened was when he moved out and "came out of the closet."

If you are saying that you saw this and he doesn't know that you did, and that you are unsure if your mother knows, then it is a difficult situation. If you can muster up the courage, I would talk to him directly about it. The only way you can get a straight answer (no pun intended) is to ask him directly -- anything we say here is pure speculation. Once he tells you what is going on, it is up to you whether to discuss it with your mother. Ask him whether she knows, and if he would rather tell her himself.

If your father has been a good dad to you, then there is no real issue, other than you needing time to sort it all out in your mind - which is normal after any sudden change in someone's reality. You will feel many different emotions and they're all OK. Realize that he never meant to hurt you, he probably felt forced to live a lifestyle that's accepted by society. Just don't lash-out or burn any bridges, because once you are able to put yourself in his shoes and can understand his actions, you may be able to rebuild the relationship.

I'm sorry that you have to go through that. So many people say that it's such a natural thing, but it can really screw a kid up. Are you in high school? If so, talk to your guidance counselor about it. If not, go talk to a psychologist (on your dad's bill) They are certainly more trained than any of us sitting around answering yahoo answers.

Be open with him, try to have a conversation and be honest- about how you feel etc. You didn't mention if he is married or not? The last thing that you want to do is to blame, if he knows that you saw him then he more than likely feels guilty or ashamed. I would accept him. That doesn't necessarily mean you agree with his way of life but can accept and live with him being gay.

If he's married to a woman now that might cause a problem. He should come clean to her and not deceive her.

One of my brothers was gay. (He died of AIDS in 1991.) I didn't agree with his lifestyle but I loved him just as much after I found out he was gay as before I knew. I didn't preach at him either.
