For about a month now I've had a dry cough that gives me a sharp pain in the left side of my chest. I have no other symptoms to suggest that I have a bug and I thought at first it was just a part of my lung that was inflamed but I'm starting to worry that it might be my heart. Heart disease runs in my family but I'm only 24 and I'm a non-smoker. Any med students out there that can diagnose me? Should I be worried?

The chest pain is due to your coughing. You're coughing is probably due to an allergy to something. See the doc about your dripping sinuses, and your chest pains will go away, too.

Stop wasting your time on here then. GO TO THE DOCTORS IMMEDIATELY. Left side of chest mmmm, could that be around the heart area? If you're fit and healthy you've got less to worry about than, say for instance a heavy smoker and drinker who never goes out but probably just as much to lose. I don't want to sound patronising nor do i want to worry you unnecessarily but do yourself a favour, book an appointment asap.

hey mike

first of all i would like to addres all that see this . we should never put an age limit on the possibilities that someone may or may not have heart or any other organ related issues of that matter. second of all i though not a student of medical treatment in any means, believe that 8 out of 10 times we can help ourselves by seeing someone who has studied and is well skilled in health practice. seeing that heart dies ease runs in your family, why not get checked out? hop fully it may just be something simple.

Any persistent symptom requires investigation you need a Doctor. It could be a million things it's not going to get diagnosed on here, that's for sure.

Just to add another dimension you might be infectious too, so go see a Doctor.

Sharp pain on breathing, particularly on the left side only can be caused by pleurisy. Your lungs sit within a pocket of air and when the lining of your lungs becomes inflamed it makes your lungs rub on the pocket and causes the pain.
Go see a doctor.

GO TO THE DOCTOR! Get a chest xray to make sure it is (or not) pneumonia, plerisy, pleural effusion, or some other condition, you are wasting precious time, don't always depend on the answers you may get on here, you need a physical check by a medical professional.

i'm not a med student but i did stay in a holiday express inn last night. don't worry, 24 is likley too young for heart trouble, it sounds like a bug with limited symptoms
