The absolute best analgesia for pleuritic chest pain is ibuprofen. Trust me, I get lots of chest infections and it's the best.

As well as the advice given by the others, trying rubbing a vapour rub on his chest and his back. The heat generated will break the mucus sitting on his chest and allow him to cough it up hopefully. If he's in a lot of pain follow the paracetamol guidelines strictly and don't go above the recommended daily intake as that could be dengerous.
I hope he gets better soon.

yes . he can get some OTC medication as well a cough expectorant some of them contain some Tylenol .
another thing is too have him sit up prop him up in bed or in a chair with pillows he should sleep like this as well .
all manner of creams help with the soreness a back rub is good . i have asthma and i get infections often . i like my girlfriend to squeeze me just under the arm pits a really tight hug . there are muscles there that kick into action to help with breathing and get sore because they are not used to this.
take showers hot showers.
and or baths.
if the pain gets to bad then be sure to go back to the doctors
not long ago i had an infection in my chest i thought i was over it but had been coughing up stuff for weeks then this day i said OK enough cough meds now i will go with out them as i feel better . i was sitting here just like this and i coughed one time and a pain in my right side was so bad i could not stand up barely talk had to go in ambulance to hosp. it was just a pulled muscle but wow that hurt.
so my point is keep on top of this .

He might find it easier to breathe if he inhales eucalyptus oil- you can buy it in any health food store and put 5-10 drops in a large bowl of boiling water, get him to put his head over the bowl and a tea towel over his head and inhale for a few minutes- it should help open everything up a bit.

If he's having problems sleeping, he should also try sleeping propped up or sitting up if he can manage it- it helps a lot.

I know how horrible and painful chest infections can be and only hope this helps a little!

Paracetamol. I hope he doesn't smoke, as of course, that will make it worse. If he's worried he could ring NHS DIRECT on 08454647
