Mitral valve prolapse..anyone familiar with it?

Question

2 years ago i was informed that i have this disease..the cardiologist heard heart murmurs and i have three heart beats instead of just two.

anyone familiar with it?

what shld i do? i can barely walk up the stairs without me feeling tired all the time...=(

Your mitral valve is on the left side of your heart, and normally it closes during systole, or when your heart is pumping blood out into the rest of your body. In mitral valve prolapse, the mitral valves are damaged so that during systole, the valves don't form a good closure and are pushed back a bit into the left atrium (ie the prolapse). The click, or the third heart sound you mentioned, is because of the movement of the damaged valve, and the murmur is a sign blood is flowing backward into the left atrium.

Generally, most people with MVP don't have symptoms, but some--like you--can have blood flow backward (this is called mitral regurgitation), and symptoms like getting tired with physical activity, dizziness, etc., develop. This is because less blood is now pushed forward into the rest of your body.

Your cardiologist is best at managing your MVP.

They can recommend some drugs that are used for congestive heart failure, which is what MVP can develop into in some people. These are diuretics to decrease the fluid back-up and some others to slow your heart rate so that your heart can pump more efficiently. Also, it is important to let your dentist or other doctors know as well. If your MVP is severe, there is an option of getting the valve repaired or replaced.

i have it and i am 18. i am on a beta blocker that lets me live a normal life and not feel as tired as quickly as i used to.
