I run a homeschool band, and we just started colorguard this year. I got the colorguard instructor from the local high school to write our routine. It's 3-1/2 minutes long. She put it on paper and went over it with me (we don't always use the same terminology, so that took about 20 minutes). I asked her what I owed her, and she doesn't know. She doesn't know how much time she spent on it either. She said just pay what I could. Well, I don't know the average going rate or anything. So, instructors, please tell me what you would expect to be paid for this.

She has never written just a routine before without being the instructor of the group for the season, therefore she says she doesn't know what to charge. There must be someone out there who has been paid to write a routine....

As a former colorguard instructor I can tell you that it's not easy to write a routine, and the instructor who wrote it should be paid fairly for what she has done. However, I also know that pay can vary depending on a lot of variables.... location, for instance, also the size of the guard, and budget of the band.

Your budget needs to be taken into consideration. His/Her time needs to be taken into consideration as well as the quality of the routine. The routine is probably pretty simple since you are working with home schooled kids who have probably never been on colorguard before, so it should cost less.

I live in Texas currently and I know that to write a routine to a high school, and to teach it to the guard, I got paid $1000.00 per month. Since all your instructor did was to write the routine, then she only did half the work.

I think $500.00 is fair.

Ok well this is a weird question. She wrote you three and a half minute routine... umm. well it depends first of all how much she got paid for her other routines she has written. Maybe it could be like... 50$ a minute wrote... or maybe 100$ a minute wrote... i really don't know. it is a sticky situation. i would ask her what she is normally paid. i am sorry that i can't help any more... but i don't know the whole situation... i don't know if it was good work that she wrote or if it was half assed. i don't know. when i did my routine i didn't get paid... i got into the winterguard for free... so it was a fair trade... about $500 for the season.

Ya' know! That's what I like about you... You know which men you want to seduce, and then turn into a pathetic simpering whimpering empty shelluva' man, within a very short time... (By the way...where do you jog? For you...I'll wear spandex, and make sure my sweet oz is ready and willing and waiting for you, as I temporarily suck in my stomach, and increase my jogging pace to fool you into thinking I'm a "God of stamina and strength," before I hide shortly thereafter, and wheeze breathlessly from that momentary "spurt" of jogging effort designed to get you all "aroused...")
