Has anyone every thrown a large outdoor party on their own? I was thinking maybe I should have more casual fete outdoors (with a beach or polynesian theme), but still with good food and a DJ. Like maybe I could do it at a park or something since my backyard isn't really appealing and I want a good amount of people there. How would I go about using a public park space?

Go to your local town/city hall and inquire at the park and rec. dept. as to whether or not they require a permit or reservation to have a private party on public property. My town has a pavillion at a public park that can be reserved in advance with no fee involved, just by filing the proper paperwork. Or maybe reserve several contiguous campground plots at a state park (for a fee) and have your party there. Set up a few tents and awnings so that party goers can drink and not worry about driving home afterwards. Have fun!

You can't use a park or a public space unless you ask for permission

How about doing it in a private club with a swimming pool

Gnometome is right about the permits. However, public parks usually have rules about NO ALCOHOL, so make sure to consider that.
