I have bronchitis & asthma. When I sleep on my back, I wake up with coughing fits. Sleeping on my right side helps me sleep all night peacefully. I was wondering why this was happening?

it is harder to breath laying flat and being sick makes it that much more so. My son and I try to use 2-3 pillows to stay propped up and always take an allergy med before going to sleep to help decrease the mucus and to thin it out.

sleeping lying flat with severe asthma's already a problem - but even with just mild asthma (like I have) and then when there's bronchitis on top of that, your lungs are pretty plugged up - it's hard to get those pockets (alveoli) to open up when they're full from your cold!

When I get a chest cold or bronchitis, I prop myself up slightly - not to "sitting up" cuz then I'd never fall asleep, but so I'm on maybe a 20 degree incline - takes some of the pressure off my chest.

I also had this problem, to this day I can only sleep on one side or another. The issue has to do with the line the phlegm has to travel when you lie down, it's easier for it to interfere with your breathing when you lie flat then when you lie on your side, then it has a harder time being expelled while you sleep.
Keep your iron levels high when you have any chest illness, helps you heal in no time.
