Was one of the staple food of the ancient Aztecs, spirulina is rich in chlorophyll, protein, beta carotene, omega 3 fatty acids, minerals, enzymes and nucleic acids. (Mineral content depends upon the mineral content of the water it was grown in)
Toxins would be present ONLY if the growing medium contains toxins.
Freeze dried processed spirulina is the best way to go (not heat processing) since it is said to denature some of the toxins if any.
Spirulina is said to be the easiest "pond scum" to consume since it's cell walls are composed of mucopolysaccharides rather than indegestible cellulose.

There are reported allergic reactions to spirulina. Symptoms include dry fevers and nausea. In such instances inducing vomiting to quell the symptoms and contacting medical services is recommended.
