Genital herpes is ONLY spread by sex (vaginal, oral and anal) and by DIRECT skin to skin contact with the infected area. There is also childbirth but this is VERY rare.
Genital herpes is NOT spread by using a toilet after someone who has the virus though. You also CAN'T get it from using the shower/bathtub after someone or using a pool or hot tube either. Many doctors suggest sharing a towel with somebody with active lesions should be avoided though.
I have personally had genital herpes for over 6 years. I shared a bathroom with my two younger brothers for most of those 6 years. Neither of them ever got the virus from me by using the toilet or shower after me. I've also had many family members and boyfriends (now ex's) use the bathroom after I have used it and NONE of them ever contracted genital herpes from it. It's just not spread that way!

Genital Herpes is Cold sores in the worst spot.
Like cold sores they can be transferred to tender sensitive skin. So don't go near the lesions and you'll be just fine.
