I tried to donate blood. I got a letter saying that they could not accept my blood due to the results of a positive ELIZA (HIV) test and then a Negative Western Blot (confirmatory) so basically it was a false positive. I have done plenty of research and I am nervous...because why would the eliza come out positive? They run the ELIZA twice before they run Western Blot...why would my body be producing the antibodies for hiv and not the virus? its contradictory. Plus I have never done a drug in my life and i am not a whore.

I recommend that you go to a doctor or an anonymous clinic and tell them what you told us. Get tested again and ask for the western blot. Antibodies and virus are the same. It is the HIV antibody, what the virus produces. So it really means nothing. You're just one of the few that managed to get a false positve. So, if you have been playing it safe by using condoms and not doing drugs, then relax and go get retested.

The ELISA test can come back positive for a lot of reasons, none of which mean that you have been exposed to HIV. That's why it's always confirmed by the Western Blot. Do a little research and you will see that many ELISA tests come back positive - they use it as an inexpensive screening test because it's fast and cheap whereas the Western Blot is more expensive and takes longer.

Time to make an appointment with a doctor! They can run some further tests and explain the ones you have already had. It sounds like the system that informed you that you can't donate blood was less than sympathetic.

ELIZA is a nonspecific test, if the western blot is negative you do not have HIV. so relax
