Chickens lay eggs no matter what. When the egg is not fertilized (ie: when the mommy chicken and daddy chicken did not 'get it on') then you just get a regular egg that we would eat. When the egg is fertilized, then you get a baby chicken.

after the hen's lay egg's one will set on them (if there ready to set, you will know because no matter how many times you take her off the eggs she will go right back on and set.) this is when you should mark the eggs with a marker, just a dot on all sides, so if other hen lay there eggs in the nest you will know to take them out. the place a small bowl of food and water in the box , if it big enough that the water won't spill and get on the eggs. Do not every wash eggs your trying to hatch. Mark your calender the day you notice the hen setting, and in 23 day's some of the chick's will start hatching out, It may take 25 or so days for all to hatch. Hint: pick up eggs and listen if the chick is alive you can hear it chirp. but don't shake the egg . and give it time, it don't always chirp sometimes there asleep. Also the yellow is there food source so if they hatch and still have yellow at there rear don't worry that to feed them . Because the mother hen wont leave the other eggs until she's sure there all hatched. Hope this helped.

Well, in nature, the hen would lay an egg, and keep it warm until it pecks its way out of the shell. In factory farming thought, the eggs are snatched from the ill hens, and force hatched in incubators, so they can be pumped full of growth hormones and put into the food supply as well. Baby male chicks are tossed alive into grinders. An egg that is unfertilized is simply an egg.

they hatch from eggs. They use a thing called a "egg tooth"on their beak and slowly crack their shell. It takes hours for the baby chicken to get out.
