If you can't handle hot things, I would really suggest the Chicken Makhani with Naan (bread).

If you really like hot stuff, get the lamb vindaloo and some potato samosas.

If you are a vegetarian, get the aloo choley (curried garbanzos/potatoes), or the aloo gobhi (curried cauliflower/potatoes), with paneer pakora appetizer (fried fresh cheese with chutney)

If you have an open mind, and enjoy lots of spice, you are in for a real treat.

You're going to get a lot of people making suggestions based of person loves.

I'd rather ask you some questions: are you adventurous? Do you like spicy food? What about "spiced" food? Have you ever had Indian, Pakistani, Afghani, or other foods from that part of the world? Are you OK with all vegetable dishes? What if those veggies are lentils, spinach, and eggplant?

If you're a true novice, something like Tandoori Chicken is good because it introduces you to Indian spices without being too unusual. Anyone that's had BBQ chicken, for example, is not going to find is scary.

A biriyani is also good, since it's just a bunch of seasoned rice with some familiar veggies (e.g., peas) and maybe some chicken or lamb and even fruits/nuts.

Of course, if you're willing to jump in, then any number of curries can be excellent choices.

Personally, I always order the "chicken curry." Each restaurant has something with this generic name. And, in each place, it's different. It's a chance to try what spices the individual chef wants to use.

Definitively try the breads. Naan is similar enough to pita, but the real treats (in my opinion) come when you branch out to roti, poori, and paratha.

I suggest asking the waiter for recommendations. You'll be able to tell them exactly what you want, ie, which meat/veg, and how spicy! There are many different types of Indian restaurants, south Indian food is totally different to North Moghul cuisine, and the food you'd get in gujarat (vegetarian) is totally different to street food in Bombay!
I assume youre going to a curry house, most of these "Indian" (theyre mainly owned by pakistani or bangladeshi people!lol) restaurants use a very westernised menu, and because there is no such thing in India, every restaurant that produces it, has their own altered recipe and speciality. So a korma in one place, can be a makhani in another. lol, The bases may be the same. My friend ordered a Balti in New Delhi last year, and they brought him a plastic mop bucket! Because Balti in india means bucket, not the dish we get in our part of the world!loll Good Luck, and I hope you enjoy it! x

Tandoori chicken is so good. And if you like curry you will have lots of other things to try. If you go with a friend get an extra plate so you can try each others foods. Indian food is my favorite and there is such a variety.

Butter Chicken is a great dish, very rish and creamy with pilau rice.

You could try a chicken tikka starter.

All Indian food is great just make sure you know whats very hot before you order incase you dont like hot food.

I would start off with a plate of samosas. It's an appetizer that's a puff pastry shell with spicy potatoes, onions and peas. Then the puff pastry is deep fried to a nice golden brown color. This is really good with a tamarind and coriander chutney.

I suggest asking the waiter, his recommendations & suggestions will be based on the specialities of that particular restaurant. Combine his suggestions with your own personal preferences & I am sure you will have a wonderful selection of delicious dishes.

ENJOY!

Tandoori chicken, naan, samosas with chutney. Do have the gulab jamun for dessert if they have them.
Enjoy!
