Before I switched to a mail order pharmacy, my prescription came equipped with an information sheet that suggest proper timing for taking Metformin. Since going to a mail order pharmacy, I haven't seen anything like that.
However, since I take Metformin, my prescription said that I was to take it with a meal. I take it twice a day.
If you get your prescrption from a pharmacy, ask the pharmacist. I've found that my pharmacist has more time to spend with my questions than my doctor ever had. And I've found the pharmacist to be correct everytime I have had to ask questions.

where i work i am in charged of handing out the medication and have a few people on metformin we have them take it 30 min before there meal due to the fact that it is suppose to block the sugar intake from the meal but most of my patients take two tabs 2x a day. ask your doctor what he recommends for you

Your doctor would be the best one to ask. I have seen people take their metformin with meals and just before. Watch your sugar levels and see what works best for you.

The first two answers aren't taking into account how Metformin works. You take it 1/2 hour before meals for it to work optimally.
If you want an explanation, I'll be happy to provide it.

Mine specifically says in big, bold letters TAKE WITH FOOD. I notice a definate difference if I forget and take at bedtime (on an empty stomach). If I take with food, no problems. If I take on an empty stomach, I often get an upset stomach.
