you can get an STD from sex -hence the name Sexually Transmitted Disease. this will include sex done orally, vaginally, hand jobs (think warts or herpes), and anally.
use a condom and trust no one but yourself.

Some diseases that you can catch from having anal sex:
HIV, Herpes, HPV (causes genital warts), and Hepatitis.
Your risk for getting those depends on things like whether or not the sex is protected, what else you do after that, etc...
Anytime you have contact with someone where their private parts are touching yours (protected or not) and anytime there is an exposure to bodily fluid, you are at risk for an STD.

Yes you can, in fact it is the easiest way to get an STD. Whoever told you you can't...I'd shy away from them as being a fount of wisdom...
