Sounds to me like you have removed your sound card driver.

If you still have the disks that came with your computer, insert the motherboards disk and install the sound card driver.

If you have a discrete sound card i.e. one that isn't soldered into the motherboard then you should use it's disk to re-install the driver.

There is an easy way to check whether you are using onboard sound or not. Look at the back of the computer. If your speakers are plugged into the middle of the computer very close to the keyboard and mouse it's more likely you have onboard sound.

If the speakers are plugged into the computer more towards the bottom it's a discrete card. If you can remove the side panel. If the speakers are plugged into a horizontal card, positioned in a white slot (usually white) it's definitely a discrete card. Check that card for the make and model and search for it's driver on yahoo or google.

If you have an onboard card look at your motherboard and try to see if you can find it's make and model printed on the board or use software like Sisoft Sandra Lite to determine what motherboard you have (Download and INSTALL. Open > Click HARDWARE and them MAINBOARD).

When you know what motherboard you have you can go to the manufactures website and download the sound driver for your motherboard there (if you don't have the cd that is). Email me if you have a hard time finding the manufacturers website.
