When do Sri Lankans eat chicken curry? On festivals, every once in a while, or everyday? Why do they eat it? Just because its good or because its a religious pratice? If you have tried it, what is a good Sri Lankan version of chicken curry's recipe???

Chicken Curry Sri Lankan Style

Ingredients:

1 chicken, cut in small parts
1 large onion, finely cut
1 large piece of garlic, chopped
1 piece cinnamon
1 pinch saffron (Kurkuma)
1/2 tsp. chilli powder
2 Tbls. roasted curry powder (you may use Madras curry powder but roast in a dry pan over medium heat until dark brown in colour)
ground pepper
salt
juice of half a lime or 1 Tbls. vinegar
3 to 4 cloves
2 cardamoms
a little oil for frying
1/2 tea cup coconut milk or cream (If available)

METHOD:

Wash the pieces of chicken and put them into a dish or pan. Drain well.

Add all the ingredients except the, cloves and cardamoms. Mix well and leave it covered for an hour or two.

Heat the oil a pan and fry the pieces of chicken turning them around until they are lightly browned. Reduce the heat to almost a minimum, add the cloves and cardamoms, and cook gently in the closed pan until the chicken is tender.

If you have some coconut cream, add it and simmer for another 15 to 20 minutes stirring occasionally.

Tastes best after a couple of hours or even better - the next day!

Like Indians, Sri Lankans eat chicken curry when they are in the mood. Sri Lankan chicken curry is most similar to South Indian style chicken curry (contains coconut). As far as religion is concerned, most Sri Lankans are Buddhist, the rest are Hindus.
Chicken (or any meat for that matter) is NOT associated with religious practices, when it comes to religious festivals & holy days: everyone is a vegetarian.

I do not know of Sri Lanka, but I was in Calcutta and they eat it all the time as it is good and a staple food.

I do not have a Sri Lankan recipe, but I warn you to have a good oven hood on high and all the windows open in the house as it will "stink" up everything. I happen to like the smell and makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

Thai's also have a curry and it has more coconut milk in it and very delicious.

Places for recipes would be www.foodtv.com and recipezaar.com and word search.

A good flat bread like pita goes great with it. In India it is called Naan.

Most Indians eat curry almost every meals. It may be due to their culture. It is just like why americans eat hamburgers, and chinese eat rice.

Btw, curry taste very nice.
