The way I understand it is that HIV is the virus and saying you are HIV positive means you test positive for the virus in your body.

AIDS is the syndrome or group of problems and sicknesses (like having pneumonia, cancerous cells, etc all at the same time) that is caused by the HIV virus.

The virus attacks the immune system so the virus itself does not kill but the diseases caught having a compromised immune system or the complications from having an unhealthy, unbalanced body.

That is what I was told in school....

Hi,

HIV means Human Immuno virus and AIDS refers to Acquired Immuno Deficiency Virus. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. During the HIV infection the WBC count ll be 200 or below this. Due to the decrease in T cell count, immune system in the human body starts declining in its activity and easily prone to entry of different viruses, bacteria and fungal diseases too. So initially the body is infected with a single virus but later it acquires infection from different sources of microbial agents so it is called as AIDS.

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. AIDS stands for
A- Acquired meaning something you get
I- Immune, the part of our body that keeps us healthy and fights off infections
D- Deficiency is lacking or not enough of
S- Syndrome- A group of diseases

A person is actually diagnosed with AIDS if their T-cell count is below 200 AND they have a Opportunistic Infection.

To sum it all up, HIV is the VIRUS and AIDS is the DISEASE caused by the Virus.

HIV is human immunodifficency virus .HIV POSITIVE means one is carrying the virus in him/her but yet the body immune system is strong & no overt signs of illness appears though the person can infect others in this carrier state. This may last for months to years even depending on bofy defences.
AIDS is when the immune system broke down & due to loss of immunity many different types of diseases affect the person & he/she cant fight them as CD 4 count falls below 200.

AIDS is the most severe manifestation of infection with HIV. HIV is a retrovirus that primarily infects vital components of the human immune system such as CD4+ T cells (a subset of T cells), macrophages and dendritic cells. It directly and indirectly destroys CD4+ T cells. CD4+ T cells are required for the proper functioning of the immune system. When HIV kills CD4+ T cells so that there are fewer than 200 CD4+ T cells per microliter (µL) of blood, cellular immunity is lost, leading to the condition known as AIDS. Acute HIV infection progresses over time to clinical latent HIV infection and then to early symptomatic HIV infection and later to AIDS, which is identified on the basis of the amount of CD4+ T cells in the blood and the presence of certain infections.

In the absence of antiretroviral therapy, the median time of progression from HIV infection to AIDS is nine to ten years, and the median survival time after developing AIDS is only 9.2 months.[7] However, the rate of clinical disease progression varies widely between individuals, from two weeks up to 20 years. Many factors affect the rate of progression. These include factors that influence the body's ability to defend against HIV such as the infected person's general immune function.[8][9] Older people have weaker immune systems, and therefore have a greater risk of rapid disease progression than younger people. Poor access to health care and the existence of coexisting infections such as tuberculosis also may predispose people to faster disease progression.[7][10][11] The infected person's genetic inheritance plays an important role and some people are resistant to certain strains of HIV. An example of this is people with the CCR5-Δ32 mutation are resistant to infection with certain strains of HIV.[12] HIV is genetically variable and exists as different strains, which cause different rates of clinical disease progression.[13][14][15] The use of highly active antiretroviral therapy prolongs both the median time of progression to AIDS and the median survival time.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus is the virus that destroys your immune system. Once you have less than 200 white blood cells in your body, it's then called AIDS. And it'll still be called AIDS even if you go higher than 200 again due to meds; once you hit less than 200, you have AIDS.
