I'm going to become a vegetarian and i'm wondering if anyone knows how to gain back the nutrients and protien that you get from meat. I know there are protien pills/ shakes but I heard they make you bulk up. i'm not looking to bulk up, just trying to restore everything that I can obtain from meat. Does anyone know how?

Meat isn't all that wonderful when it comes to protein... or iron for that matter. Unless you are eating oysters on a regular basis, you are getting more iron from your plant-based sources. Here is a wide variety of vegetarian protein sources.

Protein you need in a day

Also, most people get 3-4 times as much protein as they are supposed to. If a person eats meat, the government only recommends 2 oz (maybe 4) per day. Getting too much protein can lead to kidney disease, cancer and osteoporosis

As long as you are eating a variety, you are getting all the nutrients you need. As you are just beginning, you may want to use fake meats so you can make the meals and use the cookbooks you are used to, but take out the dead animal and put in a supplement. Don't forget the tofu!

Good choice on becoming a vegetarian! :)
There are many ways of getting enough proteins,
Like in tofu and soy milk, beans (any kind), green vegetables
Quinoa and grains, lentils
If you want to eat diary products and egg's they also add proteins!
If you have a balanced diet containing the above, you do not need many pills or shakes
I'm vegan now since I'm six, all i do is once in a while i drink a protein shake and sometimes do have an iron tablet!
Living a vegetarian diet is definitely the best choice you can make and you will realise after a few months already that you feel much healthier!

Good Luck!

You will need to rely on beans, especially soy products. There are lots of "meat replicas', also fake chicken and fish of wheat gluten. The powders only bulk you up if you weight lift or work out. Good things to supplement are b vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids, maybe zinc. You will need to learn to cook with tofu, tempeh and other new protein sources. Theoretically, being vegetarian is more healthy than eating meat, but only if you take the time and make the effort to learn about the food you eat: look up foods, and measure so you REALLY know what you're eating!

im a vegetarian, and along with bulking up from eating the protein shakes some taste horrible! i suggest that you go to a local grocery store and look in the frozen food section, there stores will commonly have morning star farms foods that are high in protein and taste GREAT!

I, personally do not like the fake meats-they are a little too close to the real deal, and I am put off by them. I get my protein from beans, legumes, leafy greens and whole grains such as quinoa. I make yummy bean and cheese tacos. pupusas, and arapas. A grilled portabello mushroom can be eaten just like a burger, topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato, etc. I don't think the protein shakes and pills are necessary at all. You can get everything you need if you keep it all well balanced. (I like to think a well balanced diet means a chocolate bar in each hand, lol)

Before making the decision to go vegetarian, you should do extensive research on nutrition etc.

Protein can be obtain by eating legumes [beans], soy products, nuts, dairy, eggs, and a variety of other things.

Just check labels and do some research.
