Delsym is a great cough syrup that last 8 hours...there is a virus out there (which my family has had) that lasts about 3 weeks. Keep the humidifier going and good luck!

Is this a child you are speaking of? What age? Did they have a cold previous to the cough? Coughs can linger, but if your child is congested and not sleeping your physician needs to give you a night time syrup to calm it. Also, have your child sleep slightly elevated so the congestion doesn't hang up in the throat. Most of all, make sure there is no fever. If it doesn't subside, take them back to the doctor and push the issue. Everyone is different. When I get a cold the cough lingers for weeks. Some people fly through a cold. Your child might also have bronchitus. If your doctor is unwilling, take them to another one for a second opinion. Most of all, do not over-medicate. Good luck

I'd be very careful about letting a child suck on hard candy if they are coughing frequently. We treated more than one child in the ICU who aspirated something while coughing. She should be able to take a water bottle to school and sip on it during the day. If Delsym doesn't help, the doctor needs to order a cough syrup with codeine. That is the only drug that will help get rid of a persistent cough. Call the doctor and tell them her cough is keeping her up at night and you need a more effective cough syrup.

Put a humidifier in her room, since dry air just irritates any illness. My friend also used to give me tea when I had coughing fits from asthma and allergies. Green tea with two teaspoons of honey and a splash of lemon or lime juice works wonders every time. It actually helped me get over bronchitis when I couldn't afford to go to the doctor or get cough meds. If nothing is working, then try talking to a different doctor, or even your local pharmacist.

I know the feeling. Its so annoying too. But your doctor is right.
Let nature take its course. Ask your childs teacher if a water bottle is aloud in her class. When she begins to cough let her sip on water this may help taper the cough.

If the doctor didn't offer a diagnosis, take her back. Could be asthma, allergies or something. 2 weeks is long enough and missing school.... I wonder about that doctor.

Why is someone missing school because of a cough? Coughing should not make you miss school. Give her plenty of hard candy to suck on and if she needs a note for school in order to suck on candy in class then write one.
