When I wake up in the morning my chest hurts inside when I take a deep breath or semi deep breath. I also cough when I laugh. And yes I smoke. It's almost like my lungs can't expand that much.
I know I need to stop smoking. I plan on trying soon.

could be Pleurisy. i had it myself. i don't smoke. chest pains with every movement. read about it here. lebron james also had the same thing.

Sharp, stabbing pain towards the side and lower part of the chest

Rapid and shallow breathing

Maybe your congested from all that smoking. Quit smoking and see how you feel. I am an ex smoker and I did feel like that alot. After I quit smoking I can breath so much better and don't feel congested when I wake up.

you sound like you have emphysema (lung problem)
you might also have bronchial asthma
see a Dr the emphysemia can kill
good luck at trying to quit smoking
