Well, I went to peta.org and found out stuff they never told us about the meat and chicken we eat everyday. I was so grossed out that I am deciding to go vegan for 30 days. I want to see how a life like a vegan is like. I am starting tommorrow, Tuesday, March 13, 2007. But for some reason, I don't know the type of food from my very home can I eat without going shopping. Help please? What are the do's and don't's?

Please don't try to go vegan like that, it will be too much of a struggle to change over in one day. Most vegans start out as vegetarians and ease their way into a vegan diet.
Anyone I have ever met who has tried to go straight to vegan has become extremely frustrated, quit completely, and never wanted to do it again.
If you go to a vegetarian diet, you will save tons of lives and help the environment more than you can imagine.
For now just cut out meats. 30 days, no flesh from any carcass. Try to get organic/free range eggs and dairy. Get meat substitutes like Morningstar Farms, Boca, and Qourn products. If after 30 days, you feel good about it and want to continue, then I would advise cutting one item at a time over the period of about a year.
Good luck with it.

First of all... don't even attempt to go straight to vegan. If you're eating meat now... it will be almost impossible to adopt a vegan lifestyle that quickly. If you aren't sure what you can eat, don't even attempt vegan. It's a very strict, very involved lifestyle. I'm not bashing it by any means... but you'll be incredibly overwhelmed. Most (not all) vegans become so AFTER being vegetarian for many years. The longer you shy away from meat, the more you learn about avoiding it and all the "secret" ingredients in food that vegans must also avoid.

If you want to "test the waters" so to speak, just go veggie at first. You can always go vegan later once you have a better grasp of what each thing is. To try out vegetarianism, I'd suggest buying some of the Morningstar veggie meat substitutes. They're great for new vegetarians. At first, I just eliminated meat... but I soon realized that a lot of the things I was eating contained animal fat or broth, etc. When I realized that, I cut those things out too. More recently, I realized gelatin was still made by boiling skin & bones basically, so I cut that out as well. You basically have to become accustomed to reading (or at least scanning) the label of every food item you buy. Once you get used to it, it's easy (I've been veggie for 2yrs now), but it's definitely a challenge at first. We (society) eat WAY more animal products than we think!

Why do you stop for just 30 days?
If you saw the animal cruelty and understood that this is wrong, 30 days of you not eating meat won't change much!
My advice is if you want to go there then stop completely, and for good!

It's so easy to eat a vegan diet, things you have at home
ie: rice, cereals, pasta, get some veggies and fruit, beans or lentils and quinoa (one of the best sources for protein), you can also eat vegan meat substitutes or some tofu
There are excellent vegan soy yogurts with all kinds of flavours like fruit, vanilla, and chocolate

It's so easy to live vegan, and if cruel animal torture and killing is not enough to convince you to stop completely , then think about all the health benefits you will have being a vegan (or vegetarian) it is proven that with the right diet you will be in much better health for sure! :)

Watch out for eating too much sugar. You can eat canned vegetables, and rice is really good in nutritional value. I would find some nuts and beans that you like to eat, for protein. You will probably have to go shopping for fresh fruits and veggies, because they are healthiest for you.
I was a vegetarian/vegan for 3 years, and I have been off of it for several years, but I have just decided, to go back, because I am lactose intollerant. Look in to the new Raw Foods diet, it isn't really a diet just, if you look it up on line it will tell you the benefits, and how great they are for you.

No foods that contain animal by products such as butter, milk, yogurt, icecream, etc. These all come from cows. Jello is made from animal by products also. That is just the tip of the iceberg. I suggest you do some research first then pick a date to go full vegan. That way you can stock up on foods.

If you are going totally vegan then you will most likely have to
go shopping. because you will be unable to eat even animal by-products llike milk and such. I never went totally vegan. A true vegan eats no meat and no animal by-project.

Check out the "accidently vegan" list on the Peta website. It's a long list of regular foods that just happen to be vegan. And good luck!

Good for you! Don't make rocket science out of it. Just don't eat meat! Eat extra helpings of all the other stuff you are used to eating. Plain and simple. Try a new fruit or veggie you have never had before. Ruttabegga oven fries are awesome, as are sweet potato and turnip fries. Ever try a star fruit? Kiwi? Mango, yummy. Good luck
