You should make it a night you will remember for the rest of your life, especially when telling your kids and grandkids when they have their sweet 16th b-day party.
One idea is a Luau, that is if you have a backyard pool. Most people enjoy swiming, having fun, chatting with other friends, dancing to the music and so forth.

Everyone is going to do a tropical, beach, tiki, or hawaiian party. Which is great but...everyone will do that.
Try something just a little different. Why not do an Asian garden theme? You can decorate your deck with lights and lots of the paper chinese lanterns. You can use exotic flowers and mini shrubs. You can also set up a small fountain with stones. Play some nature music- OR play some techno type music- just to start, while people are eating.
Convert your deck after eating to a dance floor. See if you can get a strobe or black light- and play any music you like!
For food you can do almost anything, but if you want to stay in theme, try mini potstickers or wontons, mini teriyaki sticks, asian snack mix, grilled chicken and beef, or anything else you'd like.
Have fun!

For my friend's sweet sixteen she had a beach theme and on the invitation it stated that flip flops are required! That sort of sets the standard on how people could dress. With the theme, my suggestion is think of something you like and stick with it. Some examples are beachy, Hawaii theme is great for outdoors and there are a lot of low cost decorations, maybe moons and stars... or maybe even going to a party store for inspiration would be helpful.

Well, at 16 all your friends will want to look their best and not feel stupid. I think to have a
***70's HIPPIE***
theme would be great as you have the bells and the mid drift clothing available to you in todays fashion... add the big earrings and the long beads and you can all have a little fun with dressing for it...

Since it's in the summer, you might want a relaxed, beach theme.
