Who ever told you that it takes that long to clear up must not have gone to the doctor! The doctor will give you something that will help clear them up rather quickly.. or freeze them off. It is not a guarantee they will not come back. The cancer part is sort of true. The warts themselves are not cancerous however certain types of HPV can aid in causing cervical cancer... cause Dysplasia(sp?) which comes in 3 stages before reaching a cancerous level. The truth behind what you were told is that there is a state when the HPV is no longer contagious.. it is dormant At that point your immune system is taking care of the issue. However that does not mean you no longer have it, they are still unsure if certain types can go away.
You should find the links below very informative and will hopefully give you a better more informed understanding of HPV.

About 20 percent of Genital warts can clear up on thier own within 3 months without treatment. Hpv can be contagious even if there aren't any symptoms. Even tho the hpv test shows negative, the virus may be suppressed, then you may be safe for the next few years. But it is important to get tested every now and then. There are 2 main types of HPV: Low risk hpv causes genital warts and high risk causes cervical cancer (for women). You can have either or both. There is the hpv vaccine, which only helps prevent certain hpv strains.

HPV is contagious whether you have genital warts or not.

The warts don't always clear up within 2 years. Some people continue to have them for longer than that; sometimes the warts are dormant only to break out during stress.

HPV does NOT always go away for everyone. I know.

Yes, you have a chance of getting cervical cancer from the genital warts kind of HPV. Just be sure to have regular pap tests and HPV tests to keep on eye on it. Be careful about passing it on to your partner.

i was just diagnosed with hpv a month ago. had a colposcopy, and a biopsy and i am at the most dangerous stage of cervical dysplasia before it becomes cancerous. i have never had an irregular pap test before this, in 15 years. ever. this does not go away. not everyone will end up in my predicament, but hpv has no cure. please be tested yearly. i am tested yearly, and this still happened to me in a short period of time. it is possible.

HPV is a virus which cannot be "cured".However, the majority of women with healthy immune systems can supress symptoms/outbreaks.While the virus is still in your body, your body has built up immunities to it.Therefore, the chances of symptoms/abnormal paps is very rare after your body builds up immunities.
