my dad had heart attack 6 o'clock today. He lives in another state and as far as i know he's a chief, does excessive amount of beer and smoke. The doctor (through my uncle) said that he lost conscienceness due to heart attack and couldn't receive oxygen to this brain for about 6 minutes. He's in a coma atm.. he opened his eyes but can't recognize anyone. Doctor (through Uncle) said he might become a vegetable if he fails to function normally within 2 - 3 days. is it true? or is this some kind of a sick joke my dad is trying to pull off so he dont have to financially support us for amount of time? it just doesnt feel real at all that he can die within 2 - 3 days

Firstly, I'm really sorry to hear about this -- my dad died from a heart attack. However, it is unfortunately true, as your father suffered a stroke, which commonly does irreversible damage to the brain, which seems like what stage your dad is in right now. After a prolonged period, there is a low possibility of recovering any significant function, which is what the doctor was trying to convey to you. Again, I'm sorry to hear this, and I'll pray for your dad.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. If his heart stopped and he did not receive CPR, he would not get oxygen to his vital organs. Your Uncle needs to give you more details on what happened. Why don't you ask for more information, wait and see. Is it possible for you can get out to see him? Having a heart attack is not a planned event, so it is not a "sick joke" if the information is true. I'll say a prayer for him and hope that he receives the medical care that he needs. Hang in there.

The heart, being the driving pump of oxygenated blood to all parts of the body, can dramatically affect the parts that are most vulnerable to being without blood (e.g. the brain). This is probably not a stroke. It is simply the depravation of oxygen to the brain due to pump (heart) failure.

When you have a heart attack a common source of death is a sudden, very fast rhythm (ventricular tachycardia) that does not functionally pump blood through the body. This is why CPR is initiated - to assist pumping blood. And this is why a defibrillator is used - to reset the heart rhythm back to normal.

Everything is very early in the game and his prognosis can not be estimated in this format. It is possible he could die as it is possible that he could wake up and be nearly normal.

Hang in there. I am sure this is very difficult for you. God bless.

Sorry your dad is so ill.If your father is on life support and in a coma, unfortunately the possibility of him falling into a vegetative state is very real.
