No...ask Aziz...he's been shagging monkey's for years.
Seriously, this monkey story has been going around since AIDS was first diagnosed. Probably since Patient Zero was supposed to have been a male flight attendant arriving from Africa. File that story with the "world is flat" theory that was popular 500 years ago.

lisa,
No, it seems to have come from eating infected monkey meat, which includes being exposed to the blood of a monkey while butchering it.
You see, monkeys can get a virus called SIV, Simian Immunodeficiency Virus, which is very close to HIV and seems to have been the reservoir to this case of zoonosis (the "jumping" of a disease from one species to another. It happens fairly often, as in bird flu). People exposed to SIV often develop antibodies almost indestinguishable from HIV antibodies. The monkeys sold in markets in Cameroon, for example, have been estimated to be infected with SIV at a rate of about 33%. It's really easy to be exposed to it in certain parts of Africa.
We estimate that the jump occurred sometime in the 1930s.
A few years ago, a lab worker (I forget where, though the report said. I apologize for this lapse) got stuck with a needle he'd used on an SIV-infected monkey and developed HIV antibodies.
So the old (and rather low and mean) story that it came from sexual relations with a monkey is wrong. I suspect that it came from racist bigots. Eating the meat or contacting the blood of infected monkeys is the most likely path of infection.
Although "the other way around" is rather funny.

No. It came from hunting primates for food, for live capture for pets, to sell to zoos and circuses, etc.
Do a GOOGLE or YAHOO! search on [bushmeat] for more information.
