This website has a retirement party outline that you may grab some ideas from.

I like the invitation idea, and the suggested favor is also nice - a personalized candy bar (the wrapper is personalized...the actual chocolate bar is usually just Hershey's or something like that). The website gives you information about a mini address book favor too. I thought about finding nice picture frames (which can even be purchased at a dollar store), and the website also lists this idea.

Personalized M&M's are also a cute favor idea. We used them for a 50th anniversary party once and they were a big hit.

Bogdon's Reception Stick Candy is sticks of various flavors of hard candy dipped in chocolate. The wrappers can be printed with a message of your choice. These can be great on their own, or you can tie a few together with a ribbon to dress it up a little.

As far as color goes, I think gold might be nice :) Really though, anything will work. It depends on how formal your going here...would you like it to be more relaxed or do you like the idea of a formal party? Again...any color scheme should go, but here are some websites that may help a little bit more...

Do a Bon Voyage themed party- the colors would be "ocean"- a mix of all blues and greens.

You could make a giant mural of a cruise ship Or a map of the world. If you have a photo of the retiree you could reproduce it about 100 times and have a "Where in the World" board of all different locations with the person glued in. For instance, you could put their face at the Eiffel Tower, at the pyramids in Egypt, at Sydney Opera House, etc.

For favors, you could do the personalized candy (as another poster mentioned) M&M, Chocolate bars, Lifesavers. OR,
you could do
-Personalized Fridge magnets shaped like Cruise ships, Whales, or Sand Castles with the retirees name and the date of the party
-Shop online for trinkety type items- seashell bottle openers, starfish and flip flop photo frames, beach pail candle holders
-Very cool dolphin topped silver wine bottle stopper http://www.cool-party-favors.com/chrome-dolphin-bottle-stopper-with-dolphin-top.html

-Have your guestbook as a giant "Our Trip" scrapbook where people sign in and take a polaroid of themselves. Put stickers and magazines on the table so people can get creative. If you have time, you could make a few location props so people could pretend to be at the beach or on a mountain top, etc (You know, those things at fairs you stick your head in and only your face sticks out.)

Have fun!
