Later on today my friend (a girl) is getting her HIV test results back. She's absolutely convinced she's got it, even though she has had 2 negative results in the last couple of months. She hasnt even had sex since the other tests!
I dont know how to reassure her she doesnt have it. Any suggestions?

You should suggest she speaks to a counsellor at the GU Clinic and talk about why she thinks she has it when she has already had 2 neg test and not had sex since.
You can only support her your a friend not a professional and it seem like whatever you say she will not believe you the best way you can help is to seek out the correct person to help her get past this and take a step back and support her.

You can go with her to her appointment. You will probably have to wait outside in the reception area. But, having a trusted friend will keep her calm. Then have her tell the HIV counselor exactly what you wrote to us: that she is sure there is something with her and WHY she feels there is something wrong. The counselor can put her fears to rest. But, did she ever get a flu-like illness in the past few months, night sweats, high fevers? Maybe that is why she is worried. These symptoms tend to be the ones that suggest HIV is in your body. Then again, she could have just caught the flu since it's flu season. And, have her ask the counselor to give her the western blot. They will have to draw her blood, but, they use these tests because they are VERY accurate. A very accurate test should put her fears to rest. Either way, whatever the outcome, be there for her. Whether it's negative or positive, she will want to lean on you for your support.

If your friend is convinced that she has HIV then there maybe something she knows that you don't know. Negative results is not a bonafied dismissal of infection with the virus that causes AIDS. It may take up to a year or longer before it's detected in a person blood stream. Rather than convincing her that she doesn't have something that you can't be sure she doesn't, I would say comfort her and let her know no matter what the results are, you are and always will be her true friend. God Bless!

Firstly, you should reassure her that regardless of what the test results are that you are her friend.

But perhaps more importantly, you should point out that it is quite likely that the results do not matter at all!

There is significant controversy in the scientific community as to whether HIV is the cause of ANYTHING let alone AIDS.

sdt clinics have specialist counsellors to deal with this kind of thing........ hiv can take months to show up in tests, thats why they like to retest after 3 months. if this one is negative she is unlikely to have hiv.....

give your friend a hug, reasure her that you are there for her then have a chat about safe sex..... cos seriously its not worth the worry when a condom could have prevented this worry now.

The test results will reassure her. Nothing else will.
