Yes its a form of herpes. Cold sores are caused by the virus known as herpes simplex type I (HSV-1). Because cold sores are caused by the virus herpes simplex I, there is no cure.

In some severe cases, the doctor may prescribe a drug called acyclovir (Zovirax), which may help shorten the length of the outbreak.
Also, good hand washing when a sore is present will help prevent the spread of the infection and will also help prevent the sore from becoming infected with bacteria, which may make the sore last longer

Cold sores — also called fever blisters — are quite different from canker sores, a condition people sometimes associate them with. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, and they're contagious. Canker sores, which aren't contagious, are ulcers that occur in the soft tissues inside your mouth, places where cold sores don't occur.
Certain strains of the herpes virus cause cold sores. Herpes simplex virus type 1 usually causes cold sores. Herpes simplex virus type 2 is usually responsible for genital herpes. However, either type of the virus can cause sores in the facial area or on the genitals. You get cold sores from another person who has an active lesion. Shared eating utensils, razors and towels may spread this infection.

Once you've had an episode of cold sores, the virus lies dormant in the nerve cells in your skin and may emerge again as an active infection at or near the original site. You may experience an itch or heightened sensitivity at the site preceding each attack. Fever, menstruation, stress and exposure to the sun may trigger a recurrence.
Cold sores generally clear up without treatment in seven to 10 days. If you experience frequent bouts, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication to treat cold sores. Using a medication may shorten the duration of cold sores and decrease your pain

I got clinically diagnosed with genital herpes (type 2) about 5 years ago, whilst I was still in college and had a foolish one-night stand. I understand a lot of people say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and all of a sudden it seemed like I was going to have to live with the implications for my entire life. The worst part was feeling I could never date men again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone that has sores round her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/2d15W everything got better.

Not only was I able to eradicate all traces of the herpes simplex virus from my system in less than 3 weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just last week, in front of everyone in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!!! This program gave me back the chance to be happy and experience true love again. Now I want to help others too by sharing this story.

It is from HSV 1 usually. However, now adays you can never be sure if it is Type 1 or 2 so you should have the blood test done to determine which type it is. The importance of knowing the difference in Type 1 there will usually be 1 breakout a year but if it is Type 2, there is possibility of up to 10 or more outbreaks; Also Oral type 1 can be spread to the genitals and vice versa. The test you would request is HerpesSelect HSV 1/2 IgG blood test. It is available at Quest Diagnostics Inc.
