It depends, is it a dry cough? If it is, just lots of liquids. If not, try Musinex (not sure about the spelling). My Mom tried it and she said it thins out all that "gunk" allowing her to not cough as much. She did say to drink plenty of water.
There used to be a honey based cough syrup called Propolis. It was wonderful, but I can't find it now. It was usually only in health food stores, but contained propolis, honey, tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil and some other healthy ingredients. It was in a brown glass bottle and apparently came from New Zealand. You could take it as often as you wanted, and it really did help coat your throat. If you can find it, get some.

Garlic, lemon and especially cayenne will not get rid of a cough. Cayenne will cause further irritation and make the cough much worse.

Moisture is one of the keys. Drink plenty of fluids to keep your mucous membranes moist. Use a cool mist humidifier in your bedroom at night, or place pots of water near your heat vents to moisturize the room.
Get some Delsym from the drug store. It contains dextromethorpan which can help mild coughs. A harsh, nagging cough may need codeine to suppress it, which you can only get from your doctor.

Sip on cool liquids throughout the day, suck on mentholated cough drops (be sure not to aspirate it if you start to cough).

If you have post nasal drip that is causing your coughing, something like sudafed may help control it. If your cough is productive and the sputum is green or yellow, or if your cough does not clear up using the above methods, go see your doctor.

Don't use cayenne! It will really irritate your throat worse.

The best way is to constantly just suck on a hard sugary candy, like lifesavers. Just buy a big bag of them and just keep sucking on one after the other - don't chew them though, sucking on the sugar will coat the back of your throat sort of, and your cough will go away and it will give whatever is causing the cough time to heal. Don't go for the mint ones though - something is different about those, although I can't pinpoint what it is. The fruit-flavored lifesavers work well for me.

Maybe you need an antibiotic. Don't let a cough go too long without seeing a doctor.
