Yes I think people do but modern medicine has not tied the mind with the body. Yet
They are starting to link laughter with better health, Breathing and distraction with pain control.
You wont be seeing the pharmaceuticals and insurance companies paying for studies on the effects of relieving a broken heart any time soon.
Look in to holistic medicine.
This is a field looking at link between foods and health, Therapy exercises and health.
You can not cure a broken heart.
You can distract your self with other interest and find some other way to motivate your self to accomplish things that make you feel good.
If you do prevent death of a broken heart it will only be until it gets broken again.
So make your survival strategy.

I once had two parakeets- one male, one female. They were obviously in love. The female flew away one day, and a few days later the male died. So sad. I have never heard of a human dying from a broken heart though. Although, from experience, it can actually feel like your heart is aching when this happens.

WOW, Do I hear you right now. I felt like I was going to, but you know what, I was in the same spot last year. I have realizied that this person, however great we got along in the beginning, and how their faults and greatness were at times trapped behind the person I thought I knew. I didn't really realize what they were about, and I believed what I wanted to. Not what was the truth. People will never change bad habbits, and if they do, they have to want it so bad, their guts hurt. At that point, they do. We have all been there. Hang in there, and you will recover. RE-focus, get back to you, and figure out what your strengths are, who you are, what you want, and establish yourself in all aspects of your life. Rejuve. You will look back and see that it wasn't meant to be. Your very, very special person whom you are meant to be with will eventually cross your path. And you will know.

I belive experiments were actually done in the 40's, some children [orphans?] were kept from affection and attention although they were fed and cleaned, and they did not thrive and died of broken hearts from no love being displayed,

Literally: Of course (Heart disease is the #1 killer of Americans)
Figuratively: There have been reports of people wasting away due to emotional trauma, but I don't know as if you could call it death by broken heart.

It's very often that older people die within a year or two of their spouse. The resulting emotional stress is often too much for a weakened immune system to handle. Younger people just need to buck up and take it. Sorry.

I'm sure that depression can kill. I know it can in animals. I've seen themselves mourn to death. I don't think a broken heart will kill anyone unless something else mentally is wrong!

yes, unhappiness due to a broken heart could lead to many things such as failure to eat, feeling depressed and isolation. all could lead to health problems and if you give up trying to be happy again , things will worsen and could affect your heart condition.
