Before I was diagnosed as having diabetes, I could actually smell the sugar in my urine. That is not a good sign, as it means the sugar in your body is not being absorbed and is exiting the body through your kidneys and urine. Once my sugar was under control, the smell was gone.

Your urine can smell for a couple of reasons. First, yes, sometimes if your sugar is high your urine takes on a sweet smell. Second, if you are not taking in enough fluid your urine can become really concentrated, thus producing an odd smell. Finally, you also want to watch your kidney function. You can end up with excess protein if your kidneys are having a problem, which. I am not sure if this would produce a smell, but it is worth checking on.

it can smell different if you are taking meds that would make it that way, or if you are not drinking enough water. some diabetics have problems with dehydration and that might be why.
my grandmother was always thirsty, (she was a diabetic) although now i'm not sure if there is any correlation to her having diabetes, medically anyway, although she believed it to be true.
it may also have something to do with the sugar in their urine.

Diabetics usually do not have a diff smell in urine but if youre blood sugars are too high your breath can smell diff. Diabetes symptoms are easily looked up on the web but excessive thirst, poor healing (sores dont go away like they used to) eyesight worsens....those were my symptoms

Yes, it can. If diabetes is poorly controlled, the urine can have a sweet smell. If you're having that problem, please see your doctor to avoid complications of uncontrolled or poorly controlled diabetes. Best wishes to you.
