Yes and no.
Cold sores are HSV-1, canker sores can be HSV-1 or they can be bacteria after an injury for instance.
HSV-2 is the kind people call genetal herpes. They are a different *strain* of the herpes virus.
They are both still a retrovirus and work in a very similar fashion.
Either one can be spread to other people and both have other complications beyond what most people know about, such as spreading to other parts of the body.
Wikipedia has a good article on it but it is quite long but not overly technical.

Definition Return to top
Herpetic stomatitis is a viral infection of the mouth characterized by ulcers and inflammation. These mouth ulcers are not the same as canker sores, which are caused by a different virus.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top
Herpetic stomatitis is a contagious viral illness caused by Herpes virus hominis (also herpes simplex virus, HSV) and is seen mainly in young children. This condition is probably a child's first exposure to the herpes virus, and it can result in a systemic illness with high fever (often as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit), blisters, ulcers in the mouth, and inflammation of the gums.
The inside of the cheeks and tongue frequently develop ulcers 1 - 5 mm in diameter with a grayish-white base and a reddish perimeter. These ulcers are very painful and cause drooling, difficulty swallowing, and decrease in food intake (even if the patient is hungry).
An adult member of the family may have a cold sore at the time the child develops the herpetic stomatitis. More likely, no source for the infection will be discovered. The illness clears up and ulcers are generally healed within 10 days.

Different but same. Oral sores are latent viruses that appear under stress, weather conditions, or other factors.
If you had an oral sore and did something with a man (I'm a woman, so if a man did something downstairs with a woman is the same thing,.....) you won't spread that sore to his region. They are different in how they outbreak or come back after infected. The oral ones live there undisturbed for years without coming back, the regional ones downstairs can come back at any time and come back more often.....
They are both uncurable, and luckily I only have the oral ones (the cancre sores in the mouth) that come back periodically, although I'm not sure what triggers them. My son also has cancre sores in his mouth but I tell him it is from not brushing his teeth, hopefully he brushes them more :-)
I also think that they are classified differently if you get them in the mouth or in your region.....one is considered a cold sore or normal, one is called an STD.

I got diagnosed with genital herpes (type 2) about three yrs ago, whilst I was still attending college and had a dumb one-night stand. I understand loads of girls say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a mistake that one time and all of a sudden it seemed like I was going to have to live with the implications for the rest of my life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date men again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone who has sores round her private parts? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/mvtym everything improved.
Not only was I able to eliminate all remnants of the herpes simplex virus from my body in less than three weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so fortunate to write that just last week, in front of everybody in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me! This method provided the opportunity to be happy and experience true love again. Now I want to help others by sharing this story.
