The test is for antibodies associated with herpes, not actually herpes. It is possible to test positive and NEVER have an outbreak or spread it. Whether or not you are contagious will depend on your specific case. I know that doesn't help much. Chances are you are not contagious but you should explain to any potential partner what you have told us. That you have been exposed to herpes and have tested positive but have never shown any symptoms, let the guy be the judge of whether or not to continue. Good Luck and hopefully you will never have an outbreak :)

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

You could have already had it and didnt know. Herpes is difficult to detect even in blood tests. it's possible that you have a different type of herpes like a cold sore type of thing and not on your genital area and that's why the test came up positive.
