Because animals actually have lives. They walk, breathe, eat, and sleep like humans do. It's a lot harder feeling sorry for a celery stick when helpless baby cows are being wrongfully slaughtered. Wow i probably spelt a lot wrong in that sentence.

Tee hee! You wanna be starting something and you did! I was a vegetarian for a few years. I got bored. There's just so many ways you can cook a plant. Getting enough protein was a problem too. Frankly, I just missed meat too!
Still, to each his own. Stop teasing the vegetarians...
...Although plants are alive and they do serve the purpose of providing us with oxygen and they do have tiny, tiny, little screams but we usually don't hear them because they have been refrigerated so long they've died of pneumonia or they were, even more cruelly, plunged into boiling water and then frozen while they were gasping their last little breaths...
...and how about those poor little microbes just trying to make a living in our mouths? Can they help it if tooth decay is bad for our teeth? Cruelly swept away by a huge brush after being smothered by abrasive toothpaste! The baking soda kind burns and burns...then those who somehow managed to hang on get flooded out by Listerine..."aaaaaaah," they cry. Death by Minty fresh!
Ok, my point was to the vegetarians...lighten up. Death is a part of life. Everything on the planet eats something else to survive. The animals were put here for our use and service.
Edit: To the Bronx guy, have you heard of anthropormorphic fallacy? You just defined it in your answer. Animals may seem to develop an attachment to people, but other animals, gimme a break. You've watched too many Disney cartoons.

Some of the animals are killed in harsh or cruel conditions. Also NOT all vegetarians think that killing animals is bad. There is a big difference in holding a pig( or little baby pigs) upside down and cutting them open( i do not know if thats excatly how they do it). Then to cut up a head of lettuce. But, also it is their own decision, so do not look down on someone because of their beliefs or the way they feel about something.

They think that killing animals are bad because if it was a baby cow it would be horriable to see his/her mother die by getting slatured in a machine. And at school cafatiraes if they get browns milk they milk there cows with a machine and sometimes blood get into the milk and then all they do is put bleach in it. And plants (even though they do have feelings) they dont have parents. and they actually live a while before dieing at the age of 1. Thank you for reading this.

That exactly why I don't consume plants, animals, or anything produced by animals or plants, even the air they breath! I only eat fungi, and bacteria.
Side note: You know, I find it hilarious how many people actually are answering this question seriously, or worse, taking extreem offense to it. Come on, people, would it hurt to have a little sense of humor?

In theory, plants could possess a mental state like pain, but if, and only if, there were a requisite complexity of organized plant tissue that could serve to instantiate the higher order mental states of consciousness and felt pain.
There is no morphological evidence that such a complexity of tissue exists in plants. Plants lack the specialized structures required for emergence of mental states. This is not to say that they cannot exhibit complex reactions, but we are simply over-interpreting such reactions if we designate them as "felt pain".
With respect to all mammals, birds, and reptiles, we know that they possess a sufficiently complex neural structure to enable felt pain plus an evolutionary need for such consciously felt states. They possess complex and specialized sense organs, they possess complex and specialized structures for processing information and for centrally orchestrating appropriate behaviors in accordance with mental representations, integrations, and reorganizations of that information. The proper attribution of felt pain in these animals is well justified. It is not for plants, by any stretch of the imagination.

Because plants, although alive, are not capable of thoughts or feelings. Therefore, unlike animals which are capable of feeling love towards one another and towards human beings, plants are simply vegetation and are inanimate objects. Besides, they have to eat something.

This is such an idiotic question.
As every schoolboy knows, and provided your school wasn't free, plants do not have a central nervous system and, therefore, the ability to suffer.

I normally try to answer stupid questions like this rationally. but after finding out my nephew was blown up in the war in Iraq, I have no patience left. You are a stupid dumb@*** for even asking this question. I have seen cows, pigs, chickens and turkeys give birth to their young, nurture them, and feel pain when they are seperated. Have YOU ever seen a cucumber CRY, BLEED, SCREAM. HURT? When I pick a cucumber from my vine, nothing fears, or bleeds. I have no need to inject my cucumber with disinfectant because its dead flesh is contaminated with feces. Don't try to hide YOUR guilt behind this stupid argument. I hear it every day. Can't you come up with something more original? No, of course you can't, because you wish to remain ignorant to the facts and stay totally closed minded, because you are too ignorant to face the facts and do the right thing. If you did your research, like I have...then you could preach to the choir. Since obviously you are clueless, go choke on your lovely steak..its your karma, after all. I, have herbs, cucumbers, potatoes, pimentos, peppers, etc, growing all over my house....do you have a cow, pig, or chicken in yours? oh, and could you slaughter it when the time came to feed your greedy face? Laugh away, thats why you posted this, but if you have an ounce of compassion in your soul, you will see my point is valid-yours is just plain stupid
