He was released from the hospital about 3 weeks ago and they gave me all of his blood results to take with me. His blood sugars are stable right now and we are doing well with managing it. I am just wondering what to expect at the first visit.

The first two posters appear to know nothing about Diabetes nor endocrinologists.
I've been a type 1 diabetic since I was 7. The doctor will want to give him a typical going over (weight, bp, etc.) , he'll wait to review his a1c results, check his feet (as diabetics are prone to foot problems), probably refer him to an opthamologist (as diabetic eye problems are serious) and then work out a meal plan as well as an insulin regime (I don't know if your son is on the pump or shots) but he'll cover all that. He'll probably discuss possible complications and what to do if your son is sick, if his sugars run low or high, things like that.
You might want to write down a list of questions to ask that you may have for him to answer as well, since we all tend to forget these kind of things at the appointment.
Good luck to you both!

They are likely to draw a fairly large amount of blood. Between now and then, compile a list of questions and have your son do the same.

The doctor will lead you through the basics , and in some places might refer you to a diabetic educator and a nutritionist.

You will be asked to assimilate quite a lot of information in a short period of time. I took a tape recorder with me.

If your son has not yet gotten a blood glucose meter, you should purchase one, ask your Endocronologist to suggest the best one.

Tell your son that My son was also diagnosed at 14, and at 16 he won a tri state road racing Championship. He is 35 now and very healthy. He credits this to understanding the relationship between food and exercise.

I wish you both the best, If I can be of more help write to me @yahoo.com Please put Diabetes in the subject line.

By the way, Im a Mom

Lauren P put it well. Take all your results from the hospital & also a record of your son's glucose results at home & his insulin dosages with you. You hopefully were given a diary for this. The more you take with you the more the doctor will be able to help you & your son.

As questions occur to you, write them down to ask the doctor. The back of the diary is a good place I find.

Good luck!!

Your son needs to be under the care of pediatric endocrinologists. Additionally he needs a dietitian and a diabetes educator. Both of you need to learn to count carbohydrates . That will determine how he eats and how much insulin to take. Take it slow. It's a lot to learn.

I'd go with Lauren P. As she herself is diabetic and has gone through this more than once she would know. And I happen to know she's right. Your son's first visit will go much like what she described. Pay attention and take her advice about everything she mentioned.

They will want to know what his blood sugar has been running, the amount of insuline he has been taking, any highs and lows, who administers the insuline (mom dad or patient), is there a school program in place (if he taking his blood sugar at school). Good Luck!!
