i've been playing hold 'em for a long time, and yet i'm not sure on one thing: the only thing u need to noe about kickers is that u need to beat the table's highest card (and ur opponent's) to avoid split pot and win, yes? is there anything else? examples and website citations would be nice^^

Just remember the best 5 cards play.
I'll give three examples

You have A-3
Opponent has A-4

Board is A-K-K-J-9

You both have 2 Pair with aces and Kings with a Jack kicker..Your kickers don't play so it's a split POT

You have K-10
Opponent has 10-8

Board is A-10-2-J-7

You have a Pair of 10's with an Ace-K-J kicker
Your opponent has 10's with an Ace Jack-8 kicker
You win with the KING kicker

You have J-J
Opponent has 9-9

Board is A-A-K-K-4
You both have Aces and Kings..Your pairs do not play because the Aces and Kings are higher than your pairs so they become kickers...You have a Jack and your opponent has a 9 kicker. You win with the Jack kicker.

Still don't get it? email me....good luck.

I think you pretty much have it right. The bottom line is the best five card hand plays. If one or both of your cards can be mixed with three or four board cards to make the best five card hand, then you win, provided you stay in the hand.

Always look at the hand and ask if either of your cards can make it better than your opponents. If you can, then you have the better hand.

For example if you have 88 and your opponent has J3 and the board is KK997, the best hand you can make is KK998. But the best hand your opponent can have is KK99J. Your eights are no good because they don't beat the nines on the board. His jack is better than the seven kicker on the board, and you only have an eight to make the board any better. His jack is good enough to take it down.

Just remember that ONLY 5 CARDS PLAY. This makes it easy

for example
player 1 has A5
player 2 has 22

board is 9977K

Player one wins the hand -- his hand is 9977A
Player two's hand is 9977K -- his twos are worthless and player 1s A is the better kicker

Example 2
Player 1 has a5
player 2 has kq
board is 88877

Both players push
Both players have 88877 for a full house
None of the players hole cards play in the best 5 card hand
so their is no kicker

Kickers are used to break a tie for the hand. If you had a-k and the other guy had a-q and you both flopped the ace then the second highest card would be used as the kicker, the board can also be played for your kicker as well.

to add to what has already been said, another important concept is knowing when the pot is likely to be split

example: you have A-7 and the board reads A-9-9-K-2...if your opponent has an ace(aside from A-9 and A-K), the pot will be split and you do not have to worry about your weak kicker, your only concerns should be about trips or two pair

Don't listen to ted...AK vs A7 only wins ~75% of the time. For playing 25 years...you'd think he'd know the basic math in the game.

I think you need to read books on hold'em. If I have AK and you have A7, who will win 90% of the time?!

Well actually here is the best answer, at least for you. If you don't know that answer then you shouldn't be playing, at least not for money.

I don't expect the 10 point, I will get them anyway.
