You can buy them in Chinatown or any Chinese or Vietnamese market. When they're not in season, you can buy them frozen, sold without the shell and in pieces. If you only need very little, I suggest you buy these frozen ones. Fresh ones will give you few pounds of flesh. It's also good for people who don't know how to open the shell. And frozen ones are all riped, so you can eat them right away.

There are tons of recipes. You can make bread with it, much like banana bread. You can make icecream... But most people just eat it alone. Here're some recipes:

The thing about durian is that if you like it, you'd like the smell. If you hate it, you hate the smell. It's what the Japanese called "Suki kirai" - you either love it or you hate it. I strangely fall in the middle ground. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. I do get annoyed by any smell that lingers in my fridge. What we do at home is that my mom would open it and quickly put them in air-tight containers before putting them in the fridge. The frozen ones also don't smell as strong.

durian is a tropical, seasonal fruit, very easily spoilt, if there's durian in nyc it'll have to be airflown, i do not think you can getit in nyc, even if there are it'll be very, very expensive, durians are readily available in a few countries in south east asia, malaysia, indonesia, thailand, you get the best in singapore, season's from july thru october, you're not allowed to hand carry them onto the plane, you need to remove the pulp, keep it in airtight containers, freeze it (good for only 48 hrs) consumed in 1-2 hrs (less if it's in hot weather), not many ppl are accustomed to the smell, most (americans & european ((westerners))) ppl smelt durian for the first time, they'll not touch it with a 20 ft, pole, it's an acquired taste, once you get pass the initial stage, you'll morgage your car just to satisfy your craving, there are many recipes that has durian as the main ingrediant, most are in pastry, mousse, pudding & drinks
