Hey,,, the light you see is called the lambda light, lambda is the term used when we talk about mixture ie 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel to carry out compete combustion within the cylinders, this light comes on if one of your sensor's is not reading properly or not working within its parameter's.
Possible faults......
1. faulty oxygen sensor(front or rear)
2. faulty mass air flow sensor
3. faulty turbo boost pressure sensor
4. faulty boost pressure regulator
5. faulty engine control module
6. faulty or blocked catylic converter
7. ripped or loose clips on intake or turbo rubber hose's.
Any of the above will cause the lambda light to switch on dus higher emission's lower fuel economy, i recommend you drop it to your local Volvo dealer, most backstreet garage's don't have the proper diagnostic equipment to read live data from the engine control module,
As for your over heating problem this wouldn't really have anything to do with the lambda light, check all coolant hoses and clips for leaks and tightness, you said you topped up the coolant a leak will lower the pressure dus lowering the boiling point of the coolant which would cause your engine to over heat.check the cap and expansion tank for hair line cracks as iv seen this a few time's,, remove the thermostat and place in a cup of boiling water to see if it opens, it should open from 80 - 90 degrees, pull the carpet back and check for dampness in the front foot-wells,, just to make sure the interior rad isn't leaking,,, although i haven't seen many of them leak on that model, also check for oil in with the coolant or coolant in with the oil, this would indicate a head gasket, tell your Volvo dealer about the overheating too, they will carry out a cooling system pressure test,
Good luck!

you have an air lock in the water sysem the warning light is telling you this because some parts of the engine are still not getting water you will have to take the radiator cap or expansion cap and leave it off start the car let it get up to normal temp and you will start to see it bubble. then keep topping up up with hot water and coolent dont put cold water in a hot system that causes air locks

red warning lights mean to stop the car turn it off, and seek help pronto.
amber warning lights, mean that there is some thing going bad, and ought to be checked over ASAP
Owners hand books that come with the cars today, have diagrams of dash board items, how they work, and how to identify what the lights are and what they mean
