Here's my guess:
Humans survived because they managed to gain a huge advantage in intelligence over other animals. This came at a cost though. While they were able to ask and answer alot of questions, there was always more questions than answers. The reason for this is that you have to have a question before you can have an answer. The questions they had answers for improved their chances for survival. But the questions they didn't have answers for used alot of energy in trying to figure them out. Energy that could better be used for survival by applying what they had already figured out.
But the nagging questions remained. They needed a convenient answer. It was the concept of the gods. The gods were behind everything they couldn't understand. This brought much needed relief to them psychologically, and thus physiologically.
As life got easier during human history, the energy that was once preserved for survival could then more and more be used to truly figure out the causes of the natural world. First came philosophy, then came science, which led to a great increase in technology. Which in turn led to the weapons you speak of.

Billions of people believe in God and we have weapons anyway. There were atheists before 100 years ago. I'm not sure what you mean, sorry.

I don't think it has an advantage. I think it is a byproduct of becoming self-aware.

"hey, what is this big yellow ball in the sky? I don't understand why it moves. It must be sun-god"
"hey, what is this white ball in the sky at night? I don't understand it, must be moon-god"

From these simple beginnings religion has mutated and evolved until you see what we have today; any number of world religions.

Perpetuation of the species - the less people question why they are here, the more time they'll spend getting down to it and begetting.
