I do 3 sets of 30 crunches on the floor, im just getting back into shape, I used to do cable crunches and inverted crunches and I never felt anything like what you describe. I always did the crunches slowly and really squeezed and flexed at the top of the crunch, and slowly went back to that floor (not just dropping to the floor)Are you sure you are doing them correctly? or maybe you need to throw in some variation, some different exercises. Below is a link that takes you to a very cool site, just click on a muscle group and it will show you a bunch of exercise for that particular muscle, even shows how to do them properly. I know alot of people who think they are doing crunches but are actually doing situps which are different. I found that doing any type of exercise very slowly greatly increases the effectiveness and greatly reduces chance of injury.

use the ab ball, and do them slower and when you get to the top, squeeze your abs for 2 seconds, and back down, go back up and squeeze for 2 seconds, do like 3-4 sets of 15reps. try that out and see what happens

Try doing them very slowly, without using momentum for a couple of minutes without interruptions. Don't forget to fight gravity!
