he's the first guy i've ever been out with - i'm 17 now and its been like 3 months!! he says he really cares about me - what does that actually mean though?!

...that he cares. Probably, also that he is caring. Not sure about careful, though.
He may have attachment, but 3 months is nothing to realise if you love someone or not. You need at least a year to get some idea, and many more years to understand if you want to stay with the person or not.
You're both very young (how old is he, by the way?), it's your first time, you are very romantic and full of expectations, but give it more time, at the same time do not get t o o in love.

thats a tough situation to be in.
theres the guys who say they care about you and they really mean it.
then theres the guys who say they love you and they act real nice and they tell u they love you and once u "give them what they want", they'll just move on to the next girl.
i know that dosent sound like ur guy to you...but guys are better actors than we think...than they think.

There is actually no assurance about the love thing but one thing is for sure,never give everything. Remember that love or loving is just like investment. The more money you invest the more painful it is for you to lose it...
