Well, it's the name of the main character in Cry the Beloved Country. More significant is the meaning of his son's name, Absalom, which was also the name of King David's son.

As for Kumalo, I'd guess that it's from the tribe. The Khumalo originated in Northern KwaZulu. They were mainly farmers before they became warriors. The Khumalos are part of a group of Zulus and Ngunis known as the Mtungwa.

And the name Stephen is from the Greek, meaning crown.
