I would either say "Oh...er thanks" and then walk away
OR (if the guy is hot)
"Cool thanks. Not so bad yourself"
OR (if the guy looks like a creepo/physco)

It really depends on the expression of your face. If you approach a female stranger with a goofy-I-want-to-bone-you type of face you might end up picking your b a l l s off the floor. However, if you approach her with a serious-psychotic-killerlike demeanour then you might end up having your butt pushed against the wall by two burly policemen.
Somewhere in between MIGHT generate a good response. I suggest practicing in front of a mirror.
Oh, do choose the girls you want to proclaim your adoration to carefully, better safe than sorry.
Take note though that majority of girls will most probably ignore you.
