My grandmother was orphaned by the Spanish flu, and married a PA coal miner to escape her foster family. Her husband died, leaving her with 11 children, and no support. His extremely hostile family burned down the house when the youngest child was 3, and she had to send the children to hide when other family tried to take them away. She married a sexually abusive man to keep her family together, and had to live with the guilt of the consequences. Throgh it all, she taught 2 susbsequent generations what love really is. She was a very brave woman.

I think there is no other generation like our grandparents. There are so many things I admire my grandparents for. I them and miss them very much.
The bravest thing I seen them do was when my grandfather was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1996 I saw them join together and thats when I knew what real love was. They fought the cancer, he lost his life because of it and a few short months later my grandmother died. A broken heart I guess. But they taught me more in those 4 or 5 months then in the 20 something years I knew them.

My grandparents were Holocaust survivors, they never lost their faith in g-d. They always said we don't know why He does what He does, but there is always a reason. In the world to come we will find out why.

They were grateful, and not bitter people. When they came to America, they had to learn a new language, and lived in poverty, yet they never made my mother feel like they were poor. She grew up with high self esteem, and good morals.

They had to fight in WW1 and WW2
My family is orginally from Scotland..and my mom and dad both lost their homes in WW2. My dad was a little boy, and he put his goldfish under the kitchen table and went to a shelter, the next day they went back and the house was no more. My grandpa's and great uncle's all fought in the wars both...
I'll always be grateful for their sacrifice and for those of them who lost their lives..

Maternal grandmother: survive after she became a young widow in 1965.

Paternal grandfather: storm the beach at Normandy.

Paternal grandmother: at family gatherings, my grandfather always told my grandmother when it was time for them to leave. He'd just get to a point where he'd look over and say, "Well, Grandma, you ready to go?" And she would just finish her coffee, gather their coats, and off they'd go.

Her last Christmas (she was dying of cancer), she was sitting around, talking, having a good time, and Grandpa said, "Well, Grandma, you ready to go?"

Grandma said, "No."

The room literally came to a screeching halt. Seriously. Everyone stopped to see what would happen next.

And what happened next was, my grandfather shrugged his shoulders and got up to get another cup of coffee. I think my grandmother regretted not saying it sooner.
