After enlightenment, Buddha went on teaching his ideas for a long time until he died an old man.
Enlightenment is being able to understand what you want to understand. It isn't a single type of divine event.
There are many things you can become enlightened about, and the important thing to remember is that you could be wrong. You may think you finally understand.... but you could be wrong.

Buddha's enlightenment was a small thing, but for him it was huge... he finally understood how to change one's actions and be happy. We know now what he thought of and can go further with that... it doesn't make us 'enlightened' just cause we know about it.

I remember reading a story once about a man who met a Wise Man on the road. For me the story answers your question.

The man comes across the Wise Man as he is walking home, carrying a bundle of sticks for his fire.

'Master,' the man asks 'how can I attain enlightenment?' At which the Wise Man stoops and puts down his bundle, but says nothing.

Taking this as an answer, the man continues 'And when one attains enlightenment, how should one act then?' . To which the Wise Man again says nothing, but simply picks up his burden and carries on his way.

Good question,
The cycle of birth/rebirth of a pagan ends and he/she either become a Muslim or gets birth in a Muslim family, or any other monotheistic religion. So it becomes his/her last worldly life. Than goes to hereafter, either Paradise or Hell.
People who are buried in graves, after death, are the one enlightened and the people who are burned, after their death, are the one need to repeat their life cycle, unless become Muslim.
This is the link of paganism and Islam, or other monotheistic religions.
